.                                  Vera Emily Bond Harvey, 89, of Waynesboro passed away Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Augusta Health of a failing
.                                  heart. She was born October 9, 1923 in Floyd County, daughter of the late Isaac Shafter and Ada Marshall Bond.
.                                  Mrs. Harvey grew up during the Great Depression among a family of six siblings. As the second oldest, she helped
.                                  her big sister take care of her younger brothers and sisters while their parents worked at the cotton mill in Danville to
.                                  keep food on the table during rough times that Americans today can't even begin to imagine or appreciate. As a
.                                  teenager, Mrs. Harvey worked at the cotton mill for a short time herself, always dressed like a movie star, complete
.                                  with impeccable red nails and the highest of heels. She designed and made her own clothes based on what she saw the
.                                  famous actresses wear in the films at the Saturday matinee she and her sisters went to every weekend. During World
.                                  War Two, Mrs. Harvey trained to be a nurse cadet. The war ended before she finished her training and the soldiers
.                                  returned home from Europe. One of the returning soldiers was Mr. Harvey. He wasn't home long before he married
.                                  the woman of his dreams. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey were together for more than 50 years until his death. They had three
.                                  children: Danny, Vera-Ellen and Tami (Tamara). Mrs. Harvey returned to her dream to be a nurse when she was in her
.                                  fifties. She went back to school, got her nursing education and served as an LPN at Waynesboro Community Hospital
.                                  for several years. Besides being a nurse, Mrs. Harvey was also a skilled seamstress and gardener. She was a shrewd
.                                  negotiator and always made the absolute best of any situation she was in. She had the ability to get the most out of
.                                  scarce resources, turning nothing into something good. She had an eye for beauty and potential when no one else could
.                                  see the possibilities. She embraced hope and saw the good side of a person or situation and even accepted the bad
.                                  with grace, patience and love. Above all, Mrs. Harvey had an unshakable faith in God and Jesus. She was a member of
.                                  Westwood Baptist Church for several decades, where she served on various committees and faithfully supported
.                                  through the end of her life. Her greatest pride was her three children. She showed them the meaning of unconditional
.                                  and selfless love not by her words but by her actions. Her children always knew she was there for them. She put her
.                                  children's needs before her own even to the end. Mrs. Harvey did not want her children to worry about her old age.
.                                  She planned every detail of her life, all the way to her last day. She had impeccable directions on how she was to be
.                                  transitioned from this life to the next, leaving no guess work for her loved ones. Mrs. Harvey was in control of her
.                                  destiny, which she finally released to God. She always believed that through God love conquers all. In addition to her
.                                  parents, Mrs. Harvey was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Harvey, her three sisters Eva M. Bond, Dessie
.                                  Mae B. Barbour and Clara B. Barbour and her brother Toby C. Bonds. Survivors include three children, Danny J.
.                                  Harvey of Colorado, Vera-Ellen Harvey of Waynesboro and Tamara S. Rollison of Richmond; three grandchildren,
.                                  Christopher I. Harvey of Texas, Amelia A. Harvey of Colorado and Logan C. Neale of Richmond; one brother Francis
.                                  S. Bond of Richmond and several nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted at noon, Saturday, February 23 at
.                                  Westwood Baptist Church, 2124 Davis Road, Waynesboro, VA 22980. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.
.                                  A reception will follow the burial at the church.
